When configuring a static Rendezvous Point in the ASA (8.4(2) there is the option in ASDM to check "Generate IOS compatible register messages (Enable if your Rendezvous Point is an IOS router)."
If the RP is an IOS router, and this box is NOT checked, does that mean multicast streams will not work because no register messages coming through the ASA will reach the RP?

No, that is not true. That command only allows the ASA to send pim old-register-checksum, which is a method of registering that is not RFC compliant. Normally, if you just enable Pim on the RP and the firewall, they should see each other as neighbors and multicast should flow without any issues.
This is the command that it is being sent when you click on the box
