I'm going to be updating an older ASA 5510 to 8.4. If the plan is blow out the original configuration and start from scratch, is there any reason to do a step by step update or can we just go straight to 8.4?

For your situation- I would go straight to 8.4. Please note that you need 1Gig memory on 5510 for 8.4 version.
