ASA5520 stuck in a boot loop

Hi all,

I am trying to upgrade code on an ASA5520 with 512MB of RAM and 256MB of flash. I found that the most recent version I can use with this hardware configuration is asa8.2(5)58.  I was able to upgrade one of the pair just fine but the other one gets stuck in a boot loop, i.e. it just repeats the post over and over when it tried to load the image.  Attched is the terminal windows display of what happens.  I am able to load other versions of ASA code fine and have download a new ASA image as well.  It is probably something simple, but I am running out of ideas.

It looks to be a memory issue. Are you able to go back to old image fine? 

Please try to upgrade the ASA with tftp from Rommon. Please use the link below to understand and perform the same :

If that works, then you can try with perfom 'fsck disk0:'.

Yes I am able to go back to the old image just fine and I will try what you suggested and reply back.  Also, is the fsck disk0: performed on the cli or in rommon?

Hi Jonathan,

It looks like an issue with the image. Download a new file from cisco.com website and try the steps mentioned in last reply.

'fsck disk0:' needs to be run in cli(not in rommon) once the ASA is back with new or old image.

Also could you please run 'verify md5 disk0:asa825-58-k8.bin' in cli and if hash matches correctly.

Hi Jon,

Adding to what Akshay has suggested, also check the md5 checksum of the file that your download and compare it with the checksum mentioned on the Cisco website to check the authenticity of the image file.
