Burned ports

Hello,

I work for a company located in Luanda-Angola, during the hollidays we had a power surge that damaged two of our Cisco Swithces. On our Catalist 2960 48 ports PoE ,4 ports got completely burned ,on our Catalist 2960 48 ports PoE ,2 ports got burened as well.

Please note that the Switches were working perfectly until that power surge occured damaging our UPS along with the Switches.The issue is that our insurance won´t pay the equipment in full because most ports are still functional, so, to prevent that from happening, we need to know the following:

1-what are the chances for our switches to fail completely after 2 or more ports got burned in a power surge?

2-Can we expect our equipment to work without fail or eventually the other ports will get compromised as well?

1 - It's not possible to know whether there is other electrical damage to those switches, if there is then any reboot could trigger additional port failures, if there isn't then the switch may continue to run perfectly. There is always the possibility that if damage occurred to the switch that the damage extends to critical components such as memory and cpu, if that is the case they could eventually fail.

2 - Again this will depend on the level of damage to the system. Was the damage to the switch from the wall side or was it power feedback from whatever is connected to those switch ports?

Hello Aaron,

Thank you for your quick reply .It was a brutal power surge that burned our generator board, blew up the UPS that the switch connects to,burned the ports on the switch, some other ports on the wall and a cisco phone... all gone!
