CISCO ASA - SSH Keeps Disconnecting

I am experiencing a very annoying problem. Whenever I connect to the ASA 5510 (v8.2) via SSH I randomly get disconnected. this happens usually within a minute or two, sometimes just 5 seconds. The screen seems to freeze up and within 5 seconds the connection is lost. ssh sessions THROUGH the appliance are ok, it is only whilst connected to the device itself that I experience the disconnections.
