Cisco Firewall firmware upgrade requirement

Wai wai

Dear all,

We have a old Cisco ASA5540 firewall running on firmware version 7.0 and also a Firewall Service Module (FSWM) running on firmware version 2.3.

My question is if I would like to upgrade the Cisco ASA5540 firmware version to 7.1 above and the FWSM firewall version to 3.1 above, any requirement on the memory size or hardware to perform the firmware upgrade activity, do I require to do some memory or hardware module upgrade activty first before the firmware upgrade ?

Any restriction, shortcoming and  pre-requites to do before the firmware upgrade activity ?

Sorry for my bad English and thanks in advance.

Hello Wai Wai,

For the ASA 5540, if you plan to go to any version further than 8.3 you might need a memory upgrade ( up to 2 GBs)

For the FWSM you should only need to check the partition image and then maybe you will be good to go

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/fwsm/fwsm41/release/notes/fwsmrn41.html

Follow the guide and you will be good to go

Note: You have 2 great firewalls, I mean the ASA 5540 is amazing, take that to the latest version and enjoy all the latest new features

Since I am only plan to upgrade the ASA5540 firmware version not above version 8, so I think the current 1 GB memory should be enough. Thanks
