Down Time

Hi ,

I want to upgrade OS version on following devices, Please advice the Downtime of OS up gradation. 

ASA 5550

Current running:

Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance Software Version 8.4(5)

 Requirements:

Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance Software Version 9.1(2)

IPS 4255:

Current running:

Cisco Intrusion Prevention System, Version 7.0(8)E4

 Requirements:

Cisco Intrusion Prevention System, Version 7.0(9)E4

Both upgrades need a reboot of the appliance which means that you have to calculate with a downtime of a couple of minutes (which also depends on the complexity of your config). 

For upgrades like these I typically advertise a downtime of 30 Minutes, knowing that it's typically done in less then 10 Minutes (including basic tests).

These appliances run without any HA? Then you probably have a maintenance window that is big enough ...

And I would upgrade the ASA directly to the newest 9.1(6) release and not tho the very old 9.1(2). The actual software for the IPS is 7.1(10)E4.

which is the best way to upload OS in IPS 4255 either from GUI or CLI, which is more appropriate and can you share some links about Upgrading OS in IPS.

I always prefer to upgrade from the CLI as there you see more what then system is doing.
