effective ways of testing your IPS

Does anyone know of a way to test your IPS to see if its activly blocking spyware and or intrusions? 

We have a test comptuter and even when we go to some bad sites its not logging anything that says its bad or something was found. I would like to test it without actually grabbing anything too bad haha.
