Question from a Facebook reader : Is it best practice to connect the LAN failover through a switch or over a crossover cable?

Hi,
Either way failover works.
I think that the recommendation is to use a switch (with no other devices in the same VLAN) for failover communication.
I think that is because when using a switch and if one interface fails, it will show down on the failed unit but still will show up on the working unit, so it makes troubleshooting easier.
When you use a cross-over cable, in the same scenario, both interfaces will show down on both units.
I'm not aware if there are other advantages or downsides.
Federico.
