Does the IPS services support contract (SMartnet) also cover the ASA it is installed in, or does it require a SMartnet for each?

You need a contract on each, unless you bought them as a bundle and got a bundle contract.

It is a bundled ASA/AIP. When you order it with the serial number of the ASA, does that give you the correct contract? We were having issues getting the actual ASA Smartnet, but had no problem with the IPS one once I found the part number, and was ordered using the ASA serial and not the AIP serial. I just hope we have the correct one.
I don't know which is worse, the Smartnets, or the Licenses.

As you discovered with your AIP-SSM module, the licenses and contracts are tied to teh device's serial number.
Give TAC a call (800-553-2447)and ask them about your ASA. Be ready to provide them with teh ASA serial number. They should be able to tell you what you have.
