If I purchase a new ASA 5508-X how long will I be able to download ASA and ASDM updates for it from software.cisco.com? Every download currently says;
Cisco service contract information indicates you are not authorized to download software for the following product(s):
Will I receive a service contract with the device or is this something I need to buy separately?

There is a public data sheet for each model
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/security/asa-5500-series-next-generation-firewalls/datasheet-c78-733916.html
here is all the public sheets

I don't see one may be in one of those docs but you could ask the purchaser your getting the license off to provide the sheet first to make sure you have everything covered that you will need

Hi
No you get the software thats on it , you will get a hardware warranty think 3 months about it lasts for free , you need to buy support separately for software that will entitle you to all releases as they come out once the device is under support, same for all Cisco kit routers /switches etc
You would purchase this usually through a reseller like your local ISP provider or any Cisco gold partner located near you , this will entitle your to full replacement even after 3 months in hardware , any software that comes out in future releases for your platform and depending in support you might get TAC coverage as well for technical issues or config/design help etc

Thanks for the help.
We've been offered Cisco SmartNet which looks like it gives access to software updates.

Yes it does and smartnet can also cover a replacement device and an engineer to replace it we have it on our remote sites for that resopn csico will send a local guy out so we don't have to travel , depending on the level of smartnet so I would ask exactly what your getting for it , they should break it down

If you have Smartnet along with the device, its possible that your CCO id is not linked to the contract. This could happen when purchased through a reseller/partner. You should have them link your CCO to the contract.
