Not able to delete events permanently from the event viewer

Greetings,

I'm running ips mc on a windows 2000 server sp 4. when I go to the event viewer section, I'm able to view attacks ok, when I try to delete the events, I click on the delete from database, it warns me, I click ok, all events disapear. I exit event viewer then I go back into the event viewer again and the old events are all still there. I noticed that when I change my event threshold from the standard 50,000 events to something else, it changes but when I exit and go back into event viewer it resets the event threshold back to 50,000. Has anyone seen this before? Thank you for your help.
