I have a PIX 501 that has been behaving normally for months. Over the last few days we have been losing our connection and it seems that the PIX is the culprit. The internal interface seems to shut down completely, connecting to the PIX via the console cable and restarting it fixes it.
I'm a bit of a networking novice here, so I'm looking for any advice on where to start to try and track down what the problem might be.

What version of Pix OS is on the 501?
You can determine this with a "show version" or noticing the version during the boot process.
I do not have this problem with my pix 501 running 6.3.3.

I would recommend upgrading to the latest version of the Pix OS 6.3(3) and PDM 3.0(1) version. If you have Smartnet, you should be able to access location to download this code: http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/pix
As the other post mentioned, the 6.3.x code added support for full duplex on the outside interface and may have addressed the problem you are having through other fixes.
If the code upgrade does not fix your problem, you may have a hardware problem which would warrant opening a case with TAC.
Please let us know how it goes.

I had this problem about two month ago. The internal Interface was connected to a Catalyst 2900XL. After setting the switch-port form speed/duplex auto to 100 full, the problem was solved. I thought this could probably help you. In addition you could try a software upgrade as mentioned before.
