please let me know as to till what next possible version i can upgrade IPS 4240 5.1(5)E1 (without license)

you can upgrade to 6.0 (4.x to 5.x, 5.x to 6.x) without license. But you can not upgrade any signatures. This would be having the default signatures..

When you upgrade or patch the sensor software you automaticly get a new(er) signature pack. For example E3 was realeased last Sunday, if you upgrade to E3 you would have the most current signatures on your unlicensed sensor. As future signature only packs are released you can not apply those to your unlicensed sensor. You will either have to get a license or wait untill the next software upgrade.
