I read about a pix 501k9, which supports 3des encryption

and pix 501k8 which only supports des.

What does it mean?

Can I also use des with the version which supports 3des (the k9 model) ?

All pixen can support single des - the feature key for it is available for free. The 3des feature key costs a few more - I think the price might vary depending on model - its been 2 years since I bought a feature key.

The 3des version can run des concurrently - but why would you want to?
