I was under the impression that I should be able to access the failover firewall when it is in standby mode. Currently, I am unable to ping any interface, access the firewall via the PDM or SSH. Conversly, while consoled into the standby firewall I cannot ping the default gateway or any IP's in my internal network. What gives?

If you look in your config you should find that each interface has an ip address and a failover ip address. If it has not, then it is not configured correctly.
When it is the standby PIX you should be able to connect to it via its failover ip address.

The config looks good. Failover IP addresses are assigned for all interfaces.

Problem solved. Turns out we had a bad Gbic on the connection to our core switch from the secondary firewall.
