Solution Overview

The firmware upgrade feature, designed for ease and security, facilitates the seamless updating of the cellular modem's firmware across multiple Cellular devices. Acting as a centralized controller, Catalyst SD-WAN (vManage) serves as the command center for managing and distributing firmware updates. This ensures that all devices connected to the network receive the latest firmware version, all made possible by the new UX2.0 Firmware Upgrade workflow.

Supported Devices

From Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Control Components Release 20.12.1:

  • Cisco Catalyst Wireless Gateways (CG113-4GW6)

  • Cisco Catalyst Cellular Gateways (CG522-E, CG418-E)

From Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Control Components Release 20.14.1:

  • Cisco ISR1100 and ISR1100X Series Platforms

  • Cisco Catalyst 8200 Series Edge Platforms

  • Cisco Catalyst 8300 Series Edge Platforms

Prerequisites for Firmware Upgrade feature

  • Upgrade Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN (vManage)

  • Upgrade all Cellular devices.

  • Spin up a Remote Server for firmware image storing.

Restrictions for Cellular Modem Firmware Upgrade

  • After downloading a firmware upgrade file from software.cisco.com, do not change the filename. A device uses the filename to determine which firmware upgrade files are relevant to it.

  • Cisco SD-WAN Manager only supports upgrading the currently active firmware type. For example, a device may have five different firmware types, such as generic and firmware for four specific carriers. Only one firmware type can be active at a given time, and Cisco SD-WAN Manager upgrades only the active one.

  • Firmware downgrade is not supported by Cisco SD-WAN Manager.

Firmware Files

There are 3 files for the firmware upgrade of the CG522-E cellular gateway: •. • .CWE (based firmware file) •.NVU (carrier PRI file) • .NVU (OEM PRI file).

Note: Before you begin this procedure, make sure you have met the following modem firmware requirements:

  • If the modem firmware currently has Generic FW version 01.07.08.00, the modem must first be upgraded to Generic FW version 01.07.13.00.
  • Once that firmware upgrade is complete, the modem can be upgraded to any carrier firmware version 03.09.11.00 and later.
  • 01.07.08.00 Generic FW --> 01.07.13.00 Generic FW
  • 01.07.13.00 Generic FW --> any 03.09.11.00 carrier FW and later

For the CG418-E cellular gateway, there is 1 bundle file for firmware upgrade. • .BIN (bundle file that has based firmware + all carrier PRI + OEM PRI files).

Note: To update all 3 versions (based firmware, carrier PRI, and OEM PRI), only 1 firmware upgrade process is needed.

Add Remote Server in SD-WAN Manager

In this section, we will add the AWS Remote Server and firmware location in SD-WAN Manager. This feature lets you upgrade your device using firmware images stored on a remote server. You register a remote server with Cisco SD-WAN Manager and add the locations of firmware images on the remote server to the Cisco SD-WAN Manager software repository. When you upgrade the device, it can download the new firmware image from the remote server.

  •  Click on the Hamburger Menu and navigate to Maintenance -> Software Repository. Click on Add Remote Server

For this example, we have created a dedicated AWS Remote Server. Please take a look at the screenshot for detailed information.

Remote Server Parameters

Enter Server Name: ex. (“Firmware Server”)

Enter Server IP: <IP address>

Select Protocol: SCP

User ID: username

Password: password

Image Location: home/path/directory

VPN: Management VPN ex. (“0”)

  • Click on the Firmware tab and then click on the Add Firmware Image path.AnnaKomarovska_2-1699471997334.png
  • In this step, we will add two firmware image paths: one for the 01.07.13 Generic Firmware Version and the second for the 03.09.11 Generic Firmware Version.
    1. Add Image file path for 01.07.13 Firmware Version.
      • Select a remote server from a dropdown.
      • Provide Image file path: EM9190-01-07-13-Generic/
      • Click Add

Manage Firmware Upgrade Workflow

In this section, we will go through the Firmware Upgrade workflow to instantly upgrade the firmware on the devices on the scheduled upgrade. This feature introduces a guided workflow through which you can upgrade the software image on your Cellular devices and monitor the status of the software upgrade.  You can schedule software upgrades for Cellular devices using Cisco SD-WAN Manager.

A scheduler enables you to schedule the firmware upgrade workflow either now or Later. If you choose to schedule an upgrade for a later time, you can enter the Start Date and Start Time and Select the Time Zone.

Instant Firmware Upgrade – 01.07.13 Version

Use the following steps to start the firmware upgrade workflow:

  • In the Cisco SD-WAN Manager menu, click Workflows > Firmware Upgrade
  • Navigate to page 2. Select the upgrade devices in the workflow and select the devices that you want to upgrade. Notice the firmware version in the Current Version column.
  • Click Next

Please Read

Note: You cannot select devices with different versions, only devices with the same version can be upgraded. Up to 40 Cisco IOS XE SD-WAN devices can be upgraded and rebooted in parallel, depending on CPU resources. Devices with identical SITE IDs will be upgraded sequentially, and devices with different SITE IDs will be upgraded in parallel.
