Core issue

This issue is due to an incorrect media type on the WS-X6548-GE-TX line card. The WS-X6548-GE-TX blade is a 10/100/1000 Ethernet module and not a Gigabit Ethernet module. Also, if the ports on the switch are configured with Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) as the media type and connected to the WS-X6548-GE-TX line card, the connection may not come up due to an incorrect media type.

The show interface command on connected ports may say that the interfaces are down and down (not connected).

Resolution

In order to resolve this issue, issue the media-type command to specify the appropriate media type (for example, RJ-45 or SFP).

Notes:

  • This command is supported on Catalyst 6500 or 7600 Series Switches that are configured with a Supervisor Engine 720 only.
  • Supervisor Engine 720 port 1 has an SFP connector.
  • Supervisor Engine 720 port 2 has an RJ-45 connector and an SFP connector. You must configure the port to use one connector or the other.
