Core issue

These are the reasons the user is not able to configure a software feature:

  • You are not in the proper command mode and software configuration mode.
  • Your network administrator configured levels of user privileges on the Cisco device, granting rights to various users. These rights allow users to configure certain software features and not others.
  • The software feature is not supported in the version of code running on the Cisco device.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, perform these steps:

  1. For enable mode, issue the enable command.

For software configuration mode, issue the set command in Catalyst OS (CatOS) or issue the configure terminal command in Cisco IOS  Software or Integrated Cisco IOS Software.

The enable mode is password protected. If you cannot access it, refer to password recovery or to your network administrator, who may have configured levels of user privileges on the Cisco device.

Note: For security, physical access to the console port is required.

Certain software features in Cisco IOS Software can only be configured in special command modes (like interface commands or route maps), but they are accessible from the basic configuration mode by issuing the configure terminal command for Cisco IOS Software.

On some devices, you may need to configure VLANs by issuing the vlan database command. You can refer to the parser help by typing ? at the command line.

  2. If the software feature is not supported in the version of code running on the Cisco device, find out the minimum level required by referring to the Software Advisor
