OpenDNS not working

I went to the sites that check, and I get all the right messages.  So I know I have the DNS servers set up correctly.

However, nothing gets blocked.  I have my settings set to 'high', and still nothing gets blocked.  It was working great when I first installed it, now nothing.

I checked my ip, and made sure that it was the same as what I had set up.  Still nothing is blocked.

I also already flushed my dns cache, according to the website instructions.  ipconfig /flushdns

I also cleared my browser cache, since I'm sure someone will ask.

After your diagnostic outputs everything should work, but according to your sample domain outputs it doesn't.

The reasons I could think of:

  • Your IP address is not registered with your network, but with somebody else's.
  • You have additional resolver addresses configured, beside the OpenDNS ones.
  • Your browser circumvents OpenDNS in some way, e.g. if you have a proxy configured or turbo mode enabled with Opera or "“show suggestions for navigation errors" enabled with Chrome.
  • "The address is: 208.67.222.222. I copied the result from command prompt, don't know why didn't copy the last .222, it only copied in the first one."
This can be a reason either. This .222 should not disappear just when copying.

My IP address is registered in my network. The only DNS resolvers in my network is Open DNS. I am not using any proxy configured. It doesn't work with Chrome or Internet explorer. About not copying it is because I didn't highlighted it. I am adamant to configure OpenDNS because I am planning to buy the service for my business, but wanted to test it at home first. And I understand when you say it should work, I think the same...LOL. It work as desired in my office and not at home, which means it has something to do with my IP address. So far I registered the IP with OpenDNS. I ran out of ideas. Thanks for the help Rotblitz,

Your last and best chance is to open a support ticket: https://support.opendns.com/requests/new

You may enrich it with a link to this thread and a link to your diagnostics results from at least one of these diagnostics:
Windows: http://www.opendns.com/download/windows/diagnostic
Mac OSX: http://www.opendns.com/download/mac/diagnostic

I bet they find out what your problem is and possibly can "repair" it.

I have same problem in my computer even I follow the instruction but openDNS seems not working. On the other hand, thanks in providing diagnostic link.

I'm closing this thread at this time.  If you have an issue with OpenDNS not working, please start your own thread so we can keep everyone's issues separate and easy to follow.

1. Verify DNS Settings Again
Go to Command Prompt and run:
nginx
Copy
Edit
nslookup example.com
(Replace example.com with a blocked site.)
Check if the response comes from the correct DNS server. If it resolves normally, your DNS filtering might not be applied.
2. Confirm DNS is Set at the Right Level
If you’ve set up filtering on your router, make sure no device is bypassing it by manually setting a different DNS (e.g., Google DNS: 8.8.8.8).
Check if your device's network adapter is manually overriding the router’s DNS.
3. Restart Router & Device
Restart both your router and computer to ensure changes take effect.
4. Disable VPN or Proxy
If you’re using a VPN, proxy, or any software that modifies network settings, it could be bypassing the filtered DNS.
5. Test in a Different Browser
Some browsers (e.g., Chrome and Firefox) have secure DNS settings (DNS over HTTPS - DoH), which might override your configured DNS.
6. Check Filtering Service Logs (If Available)
If your DNS filtering service provides logs, check them to see if any requests are being blocked or if traffic is bypassing the filter.
7. Reset & Reconfigure the DNS Filtering Service
If all else fails, reset your DNS filtering settings and reconfigure them from scratch.
