Effect of the Shutdown command on optical interfaces

Does the SHTUDOWN command block the optical signal (TX signal) on an ATM/Oc3 port ?

For measurement purposes (of the FO provider)

I need to stop the laser signal on an ATM port.

If the shutdown command does not stop the laser signal, I need to go on site and plug out the fiber ....

From what I have seen, when you shut the interface AIS is sent. If you want to see no optical signal the only way i guess is to pull out the cable.
