Traceroute troubleshooting

Hi,

When I use the traceroute command on a Cisco router, I often receive the next response:

router#trace 192.168.3.2

1 192.168.1.2 20msec

2 192.168.2.2 25msec

3 192.168.3.2 20msec * 20msec

Why the is a " * " in the result, so that the traceroute is OK (destination reachable)?

Thanks for yopur help

I have heard that Cisco devices throttle ICMP messages. If some types of ICMP messages are received by a Cisco device within a particular time, they probably stop responding to later messages that arrive within that specific time and then the window moves to next set of messages. So, you see a "*" indicating timeout for some probes. The same is not true with some other operating systems.
