I'm trying to find out if my 3750 switch is able to do layer 3 routing. I'll attachment sh version command. I believe we bought the switch with SMI iso. Is their a cost to move to an EMI ios?

Hello,

you are right, you are running the SMI version. You can spot if it is EMI or SMI by looking at the image name, the SMI version (e.g. c3750-i9-mz.121.14-EA1a.bin) has the ´i9´ in it, the EMI version (e.g. c3750-i5-tar.121-19.EA1d.bin) has the ´i5´ in it. I9 is always SMI, I5 is always EMI.

I guess you are aware that the SMI version supports basic IP routing as well, that is, static and RIP routing.

There is an upgrade kit available for the SMI to EMI path, it is basically just a software image that needs to be loaded onto the switch. Here is the current pricing information:

EMI Upgrades for the Catalyst 3750

Product Number: CD-3750-EMI=

Product Description: Enhanced Multilayer Image upgrade for 3750 FE models

Service Category: C

Price: USD 1,995.00

Product Number: CD-3750G-EMI=

Product Description: Enhanced Multilayer Image upgrade for 3750 GE models

Service Category: C

Price: USD 3,995.00

HTH,

Georg

What's the difference between a FE model and a GE model.

See http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps5023/prod_models_home.html for information about 3750 models, if that's what you're asking about.

I want to know what model I have.

Guys,

I have question related to SMI and EMI version.

Here is my case:

Let say i buy each catalyst 3750 SMI and catalyst EMI with smartnet contract.

I download all the software at my tftp/ftp server.

Can I put EMI software to catalyst 3750 that i bought with SMI? Is that violate the LAW?

If it's violate the LAW of course i will buy the upgrade cost.

My point is i am try save my budget without breaking the LAW.

There is a reason why the cost for SMI is different than the cost for EMI. And I think it is quite clear that it cheats Cisco and violates the law to purchase the less expensive version and then load the more expensive version.
