I am very new to routing and have zero background in it.
My situation is that I have a Cisco 2811 router and wanted for my serial console cable to connect to the TFTP server and auto-configure. All I have connected is the RJ45 (2811/DTE end) to USB connector (laptop with PuTTY open /DCE end), and the router's power cord into the power outlet.
In privilege mode, I type in reload, and proceed with basic configuration:
When I can connect to PuTTY, I do have serial communication, but I am not getting any serial interface to auto-configure with SLARP, and my IP-Address is unassigned:
Interface IP-Address OK? Method Status Protocol
FastEthernet0/0 unassigned NO unset up down
FastEthernet0/1 unassigned NO unset up down
Serial0/0/0 unassigned NO unset down down
Serial0/1/0 unassigned NO unset down down
What am I missing here? I tried to go back to factory settings through "write erase", but am getting the same results. And I had tried to follow this, but giving serial interface an ip address and helper ip address again resulted in a down serial 0/0/0 with an unassigned IP address.

Hi @masshakar
The console cable is only for configuring the device, but not for network traffic.
The serial indicated in the guide is a DCE / DTE
