Cisco 4321 || %IOSXEBOOT-1-INVALID_IMAGE: (RP/0) Err when loading IOS

Hello Cisco Community,

The router Cisco 4321 gets stuck when trying to load IOS : isr4300-universalk9.17.06.05.SPA.bin and get the following error:

%IOSXEBOOT-1-INVALID_IMAGE: (RP/0): Incompatible hardware and software image version; newer software version required.

and then it goes to "Initializing Hardware".

I am only able to access rommon. I have tried the router to boot and load the IOS from an USB thumb drive but no luck, I still get the same result.

I have even tried with another IOS version and same results too.

Any ideas what may be causing this issue and how to fix it? Please see attachments.

Thank you,

gDay @jnavarrete76 That error usually means the ROMMON version on ur 4321 is too old for the IOS XE image u’re trying to load. U’ll need to upgrade the ROMMON first so it supports the newer 17.x images. Also try the usual steps :

From ROMMON, verify your current version with version.

Download the latest ROMMON for the ISR 4300 series from Cisco’s site.

Copy it to the router via usb or tftp and upgrade;

upgrade rom-monitor filename usb0:<rommon_filename>

and then after teh upgrade reload so u can reattempt the Ios boot.. Hope it helps and PEace!

If the router is in ROMMON, please post the complete output to the command "set" and "dir flash:".
