Are there any other purposes for distribute lists other than preventing route advertisements?

When there is no feasable successor for a route Eigrp queries all ist neighbors for the route for the route, who then query their nieghbors , and so on until the end of the network is reached. One of the boundaries is defined as a dist list, another is route summarization. Dist lists reduce the size of the domain.

I'm not sure I understand this. How would you use a dist list, or route summarization to limit the domain? The only way I've heard of doing this is by using EIGRP stub. Can you please explain further?
Thanks!
