Embedded-Service-Engine interface

Hello there.

I need to know understand about the Embedded-Service-Engine interface that is present on the Cisco ISR G2, what exactly is this interface used for? examples will be helpful here, and is this a physical interface on the back of the router or its just implemented in software?
