I have noticed the following on a cisco 6509E
Switch02#dir ?
/all List all files
/recursive List files recursively
all-filesystems List files on all filesystems
bootflash: Directory or file name
const_nvram: Directory or file name
cwan1/0-disk0: Directory or file name
cwan1/1-disk0: Directory or file name
disk0: Directory or file name
disk1: Directory or file name
null: Directory or file name
nvram: Directory or file name
sup-bootflash: Directory or file name
sup-image: Directory or file name
sup-microcode: Directory or file name
system: Directory or file name
Switch02#dir cwan1/0-disk0:
Directory of cwan1/0-disk0:/
1 -rw- 56829 Apr 16 2008 17:06:10 +00:00 running-config
128167936 bytes total (128110592 bytes free)
Switch02#dir cwan1/1-disk0:
Directory of cwan1/1-disk0:/
No files in directory
128167936 bytes total (128167936 bytes free)
My doubts are
1. whether these cwan1/0-disk0: and cwan1/1-disk0: are builtin
flash modules on Flexwan module or memory modules (SDRAM)?
2. if so can i upload my IOS in those modules becoz, my current flash size
will not support my new IOS
3. If #2 is okay, is it a best practise?
Thanks/ Sony

Hello Sony,
you haven't specified the type of supervisor you have, I guess you have a sup 720.
if so you can get a compact flash to put on the supervisor.
For sup2 you can get a PCMCIA external card.
Also the internal bootflash can be upgraded as explained here: (for sup720)
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst6500/hardware/Config_Notes/78_17277.html
if those filesystems are on the flexwan module it is probably not possible to boot from them.
It depends from the boot order: if an IOS image needs to be started before linecards are initialized the flexwan flash can be not accessible at boot time.
Even if it would be possible is not recommended.
Hope to help
Giuseppe
