OSPF redistribute connected vs network statement

Hello,

What are the main reasons to redistribute routes into OSPF or include it with the network statement?
I know with redistribute connected the routes are type-5 LSAs and with the network statement are type 1 LSA

But regarding the ospf design what is a best practice to redistribute connected or include with network statement?

Thanks
Udo

Hi,

When you see the Network Command it is used to apply for the OSPF configured networks, but when you use the command redistribute you are entirely trying to convert another routing protocols routes to OSPF.

EX  Network OSPF 10.1.1.1 0.0.0.0 area 0

EX2 Redistribute Eigrp 10 Metric 10 10 10 10 10

Hi,

Redistribution are not only for other routing protocols....also for connected networks as well.

What I want to know is the best practice when use the network command and when the redistribute connected....
Thanks
Udo

There are no best practices for this. It varies depending on design. When you redistribute you make the router an ASBR, depending on your design you may or may not want this. There are other situations where you may choose to use network statement and yet other where you may find using reditribute connected better. So whether to use network statement or do redistribute connected depends on how you want your network to behave.

HI Udo ,

We use redistribute connected in primarily two conditions.

1. When we dont want to run any routing protocol on some specific interface and still wants reachability to them.

2. Second if we run some routing protocol on the specifc interface but we dont want to redistribute that routing protcol in OSPF. Say on one interface you have EIGRP running and  you need that Prefix reachability in OSPF doamin as well but you dont want other EIGRP routes in your OSPF so this can be achieved via redistribute connected.

so this way you can have rechability of prefix in two routing protocols.

Thanks
