Resolution

Accessing the 911 mode on the Cisco VPN Concentrator can cause the device to stop functioning properly if the instructions are not followed exactly as outlined, and void the warranty unless otherwise instructed by the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC).

It is critical that you enter the commands as instructed and not deviate from it.

Before you proceed, it is important to remember to back up all config files by accessing the VPN Concentrator with the web interface and back up the config file to your local computer. Then gain console access to the VPN Concentrator.

To access 911 mode, follow the steps below.

  1. From the console, log in by typing admin at the login prompt, and typing the admin password when asked. You should then see the following information:
  2. Welcome to Cisco Systems VPN 3000 Concentrator Series Command Line Interface
Copyright (C) 1998-2002 Cisco Systems, Inc.
      1) Configuration   2) Administration   3) Monitoring   4) Save changes to Config file   5) Help Information   6) Exit
  3. At the prompt, issue the 911 command and log in again as admin.

  4. Note: This is a hidden command that puts you into special debug mode; it also stops all normal functions of the VPN Concentrator.

  5. Issue the debug 36 2 YES command.
  6. Issue the exit command to return to the normal prompt.

Note: This command restores the VPN Concentrator back to the factory defaults so you must make sure to back up the config file prior to beginning this process.

If the above procedure does not fix the problem, issue the fsck command from the console by following the steps below. It requires a short outage.

  1. Gain access to the console port and log in as admin.
  2. At the prompt, issue the 911 command.
  3. Log in as admin again.
  4. From this prompt, issue the fsck and fsck -a commands.
  5. Issue the exit command to get back to the normal prompt.
