I am trying to understand the compatibility matrix for DCNM as mentioned  in the link below:

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/datacenter/sw/10_2_x/comp_matrix/b_compatibility_matrix_10_2_1.html

It says for MDS 9100 series following versions are comptible:

Cisco MDS 9100

8.1(1), 7.3(1)DY(1), 7.3(1)D1(1), 7.3(0)DY(1), 7.3(0)D1(1), 6.2(19), 6.2(17), 6.2(15), 6.2(13b), 6.2(13a), 6.2(13), 6.2(11c), 6.2(11b), 6.2(11), 6.2(9a), 6.2(9), 6.2(7), 6.2(5a), 6.2(5), 6.2(3), 6.2(1), 5.2(8i), 5.2(8h), 5.2(8c), 5.2(8d), 5.2(8e), 5.2(8f), 5.2(8g)

So does that mean I can only go upto version 8.1(1) for my DCNM upgrade?

And does it depend on the ciso mds ios version as well?

This matrix refers to 10.2.1 of DCNM; the versions shown for MDS 9100 are MDS SAN-OS versions.
