Nexus 5000 n55-m16up SFP not present

lwilfredoflor

Hi Cisco Community,

Currently Im working on a case in witch I have the following:

actually two Nexus both with the following PDI and running 7.0(6)N1(1)

N5K-C5596UP-SUP

N55-M16UP

N55-M160L3-V2

for the N55-M16UP we have 50% eth and the other 50% FC

1-8 eth

9-16 fc

only one of the Nexus its recognizing the SFP for ETH and FC (im going to call it Nexus2), the other one its only recognizing the SFP for ETH (im going to name it Nexus1). on Nexus1 when we put the ports 1-8 on eth and 9-16 on FC the sfp its good just on eth port but not on FC port, If I change the FC to ETH then the SFP its present on the whole module.

I already changed the N55-M16UP, ensure the sfp compatibility and check the licence, the config its the same in both Nexus, same features were enable, so Would like to know if you guys could give any advice.

Thanks in advance

I think it is still true that:

If you're configuring a unified port as Fibre Channel or FCoE, confirm that  you have enabled  the feature fcoe command.

Hi Walter, thanks for the reply, currently FCOE feature its enable, here is the list of feature we have enable

feature fcoe
feature npiv
feature fport-channel-trunk
feature telnet
feature tacacs+
cfs eth distribute
feature ospf
feature interface-vlan
feature hsrp
feature lacp
feature dhcp
feature vpc
logging level vpc 4
feature lldp
feature vtp
feature fex

can you please post output of "show interface brief" for both switches.

You know, that the SFP's for ETH resp. FC are different ?

Hi Walter,

for both we are ussing the same PID  SFBR-5780AMZ-CS2 for SFP, according to the comp matrix, its compatible

Hello,
When you change the port type, are you reloading the Expansion module?
https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/datacenter/nexus5500/sw/interfaces/7x/b_5500_Interfaces_Config_Guide_Release_7x/b_5500_Interfaces_Config_Guide_Release_7x_chapter_01.html#task_A6C551C739324293B020FD7C35F018D0
Show interface fc x/y capabilities

You can compare output with working one.

If the transceiver is not recognized, you can also try the following to check status:
Interface fc x/y
service transceiver-unsupported
exit

Hi Calopez,

thanks for your response.

Yes we already reloaded the module when changing the Interface mode. I tryed the service transceiver-unsupported under interface level and global mode but nexus isnt accepting the command. Also I found this doc witch indicate that its necesary to reboot the whole switch https://www.cisco.com/c/m/en_us/techdoc/dc/reference/cli/nxos/commands/l2/port.html

This example shows how to configure a unified port on a Cisco N55-M16UP expansion module:

Hi Walter,

Actually on Nexus1 (failing one)

there are the following models

DS-SFP-FC8G-SW

DS-SFP-FC8G-LW

on Nexus2 (working one)

GLC-LH-SMD

Sorry, I am confused !

DS-SFP-FC8G-SW and DS-SFP-FC8G-LW are FC SFP's

GLC-LH-SMD is a 10G Ethernet SFP !

Are you really using FC SFP's in FC configured ports and Ethernet SFP's in Ethernet configured ports ?

for Nexus1

When interface is FC type

This is very odd !

1) have you tried to insert this sfp in any other FC configured slots ?

2) have to tried to swap a sfp from the working switch, and insert it here

3) try the opposite; insert this failing sfp on the working switch

4) the FC sfp in the Ethernet slot: can you do a "show interface fc1/48 transceiver Details"

5) inserting FC sfp's in Ethernet ports (and vice versa) doesn't make sense. It will never work.

Hi Walter, Finally cu scheduled an MW to perform several task, all with the same result, the last we did was reload the device, after that N5K start recognized all SFP on FC interfaces

I’ve seen this is the past where you cannot mix modes you either need to have the slot run FC or just ETH but not both at the same time. This was awhile ago so I’m not sure if that has been fixed.

Also make sure the FC interfaces are from the last port moving inward.

Universal ports can be FC or classical Ethernet.

You need a contiguous block of only Ethernet (from left to right) and a contiguous block of FC from right to left.
