Nexus 5500, Routed Access OSPF, LAN Enterprise License Issue

Hello,

I have question about Nexus 5500 and its LAN Enterprise license.  I had Nexus 5500 with Layer 3 Base  license, N5k was just doing some simple inter vlan routing. Then I decide to connect additional network segment to that switch, and run OSPF. Because of Layer 3 Base license limitation of 256 routes, I have purchased LAN Enterprise license. Now when I installed LAN Enterprise license and run OSPF, I am receiving about 4000 OSFP routes, but when running show license usage command, LAN_ENTERPRISE_SERVICES_PKG  license is displayed as unused.

 #show license usage
Feature                      Ins  Lic   Status Expiry Date Comments
                                 Count
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FCOE_NPV_PKG                              No    -   Unused             -
FM_SERVER_PKG                           No    -   Unused             -
ENTERPRISE_PKG                          Yes   -   Unused Never       -
FC_FEATURES_PKG                       Yes   -   In use Never       -
VMFEX_FEATURE_PKG                  No    -   Unused             -
ENHANCED_LAYER2_PKG            No    -   Unused             -
LAN_BASE_SERVICES_PKG          Yes   -   In use Never       -
LAN_ENTERPRISE_SERVICES_PKG   Yes   -   Unused Never       -
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It seems LAN Enterprise license is not activated ? Do I need to run any command ? Or Layer 3 Base is enough to handle 4000 routes ?

Hi,

According to the Cisco NX-OS Licensing Guide it’s exactly as you describe, which is up to 256 dynamic routes with the LAN base license. If you run the command show ip route summary it will tell you how many routes you have and how they’ve been learned. I assume from what you’re saying you do have more than 256 dynamic routes?

The Cisco Nexus platform does allow a grace period of 120 days for licenses, but when I’ve used these in the past there’s a note in the “Comment” field of the show license usage command which is not shown in your case.

In terms of enabling the Enterprise license, you should have received a license file when you purchased the license. You will need to copy that license file to the bootflash of the switch, and then run the command install license bootflash:<license_file>.

You can find additional information in the Managing Licenses section of the NX-OS Configuration Guide.
