check to see that both sides are not set to auto negotiate.if so, set either your NIC or the FE port to on.
Re: AUI socket? how do i convert to "standard" cabling?

you can purchase transceivers from cisco,model number is: BL50P/N 74-0742-01just be sure to set the switches on the unit as follows1 & 3 = on2 & 4 = off
