Ethernet Line Card resilience

On the 48-port 10/100/1000 card for the 6500, the ports are grouped in "12's" - presumably clustered by ASIC. Is there any benefit in distributing host connections between ASIC's? If an ASIC fails, does it bring the whole card down?
