If you do a "sh version" what does the configuration register show? It would be something like 0x2102 if it is something other than this then you may have to change it to this, which will allow you to save your running config to startup config.

Yes the interface was brought up with the "no shutdown" command...and when I run debug I can see packets from workstations to the router interface but the responses back from the router get a "unrouteable" error message.
