We are currently considering a move from an existing email server in our environment to Google Apps for Education for several reasons. Besides the obvious removal of hardware maintenance, we also would remove the need for an existing spam filter device along with an expensive email archiving solution. With such a small IT dept., we have struggle to keep up with maintaining servers and services. Google Apps for Education would alleviate/minimize at least one demand on our staff. More importantly, we have seen an explosion in requests from teachers for collaboration tools. Therefore, we want to provide them with the ability for them to collaborate through Google Docs (word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations) and to extend that work model to students.

In the education arena, it appears that the funds are going to be funneled to educational entitites through existing Title avenues which brings with it all sorts of regulations about usage. We are still, at this point, waiting to get a concrete idea of what we might be allowed to spend the funds on but are hoping that it will help leverage our existing Cisco technologies (wireless, VOIP, routing/switching, security/network management) in our classrooms. As for Cisco, as a leader in these technologies, I am sure they will see purchasing results from the inflow of funds - but I don't know if it will be a drastic one. I would guess that the degree to which they garner some of these funds will depend upon their sales and marketing force.
