AS5300

We have an AS5300 with a quad T1/E1 and 4 built-in serial interfaces (S0 - S3). Due to budget cut, we replaced the T1 line with the modem cards. Besides the dial-up features, what can we use the AS5300? With the tight budget, we want to utilize every piece of equipment that we can. Thanks.

I am not clear in your explanation what was really done when you say "we replaced the T1 line with the modem cards". In my experience of AS53xx the T1s are quite different from modem cards.

If your AS5300 has modem cards and some kind of telco connectivity (PRI or something else?) then it can provide dial-up functions. If it has T1 lines separate from the telco/dial lines then it can be used as a WAN router to provide wide area connectivity. And since it has 2 Ethernet interfaces it could connect to a switch (or maybe even 2) can provide routing functions for 1 or more VLANs.

If you can provide more detail about what the AS5300 has we might be able to provide better answers.

Thanks for your prompt response.

Sorry for not making it clear, we "replaced the T1 line with the modem cards". We removed the T1 line completely off the AS5300. For the dial-up system, we installed the modem cards on the Windows 2003 server. Therefore, the AS5300 is now available. With the tight budget, we want to utilize the AS5300.

Thanks.

If you removed the T1 completely then what you have is a router with 2 FastEthernet interfaces. Depending on your environment there are several ways that you might use the 5300. You could use the 5300 to route between 2 subnets. Or you could connect switches on one or both interfaces, configure trunking on the router interfaces, and do inter vlan routing on the 5300.
