CSS - directly connected hosts (or not)?

Do the servers being load balanced by a CSS have to be directly connected to the switch or can they be connected to L2 access switchs connected back via trunks?

they can be anywhere in your network as long as you have ip connectivity between the CSS and the servers.

Also, you need to guarantee that the server response goes back to the client THROUGH the css.
