2960X Stuck at Post

Hi. I have Catalyst 2960-X-48FPS-L Switch. I upgraded image on 15.2.6E1. But switch stuck on post during.

I face the same problem when upgrade to 15.2.6E2 and the fan not work.

1. Press mode button to enter recovery mode

2. Use usb to copy the 15.2.4E6 and info to flash drive

3. Use set command to view the boot

4. Boot= flash:/xxx15.2.4E6.bin

5.Run boot to load the image

6. Wait -> the fan turn on again

7. Reset the boot to old image

Solved, but only wake up the fan and rollback to 15.2(2)E7

Hi,

I ran into this same issue this week when trying to update a WS-2960X-48LPS-L to 15.2(7)E4. It always ended with the microcode error and got stuck in POST.

Followed @Leo Laohoo advice, pulled the power cord and plugged into the switch again. Repeated this process 4 times and voila. Yeah, our switch finally came up again and successfully upgraded to latest version. Thanks Leo!

Now what worries me is that I had previously updated another 8 2960-X switches to the same version 15.2(4)E7 (the one recommended by Cisco, BTW) and none of them ran into any trouble during the update. Any ideas about what could have happened?

I had same in new IOS c2960x-universalk9-mz.152-7.E4.bin so I deleted in rommon then boot from old IOS.

I transferred new IOS again from USB (usbflash0: ) and  verified IOS by MD5.  it is working now with new IOS.

Have the same problem with one of my switches:

Front-end Microcode IMG MGR: Programming device 0...rrrrrrwssssssss
% Front-end Microcode IMG MGR: address 0, PROGRAM failed

% Front-end Microcode IMG MGR: unable to program device: 0
% Front-end Microcode IMG MGR: malformed microcode cache

I tried unplugged power cord, firmware before upgrade 152-7 E5, also i tried 15.2.2.E9 and 15.2.4.E6 like in CSCvf24186 described.

It's one of the oldest ones I have wtih Serial FCW18..... . The other Switches with FCW19... or FCW20... did the Update great with one power-reset.

ACT2 Authentication is Passed.

Maybe someone have another hint for me?

I can't find any hint for a counterfeit Product.

prints, holographic, everything like expectet. Serial-Numbers in Rommon and on boards are also matching.

Let's see what Cisco TAC will say.

A customer of ours has an older network in an older building that will be demolished in less than two years but they needed to expand their current 2960X network without having to upgrade to newer switches so they bought a bunch of remanufactured 2960X switches.
They all came with an older 15.0 version and the first one I tried upgrading to the recent recommended version 15.2.7E5 I of course ended with doing reload instead of unpowering.

Then after reboot I ran into this microcode failure thing.
I then found this post and the cisco bug and found that you could use an in between version 15.2.4E6 and had to load it using rommon and xmodem...   Then setting the boot variable and unplugging replugging did not help but the switch got stuck at the exact same spot in the rrrrrrrrwsssssspsss.. part.

After a few times trying and failing I booted the switch into rommon by holding the button and then just booting the image from there and that seems to fully program the microcode correctly.  However it still got stuck at POST: Thermal, Fan Tests : Begin

After another pulling of the plug it finally started up in that firmware blowing on full fan the whole time until the boot completed.  Now back onto the most recent recommended version and hope this one will succeed this time.

There is a "growing" market of counterfeit 2960X. 

One of the easiest method to determine if the switch is counterfeit is to pop the lid and look underneath the motherboard.  Counterfeit 2960X have a crude "daughter card" soldered to main motherboard.

This daughter card allows the counterfeit switch to bypass the IOS image verification stage and fools the OS that the motherboard is legitimate.  This daughter card is programmed specifically to one particular IOS version.  Upgrading to different version and the switch will not boot due to POST error.
