VLan from access port does not connected over Trunk port

Hi Cisco Community,

I am fairly new to the Cisco Catalyst family and I have inherited a system which I need to upgrade/expanded/optimize.
In this process I have come across a situation which is very strange (to my limited knowledge). Here it goes:

I have a network of seven switches (C2960X Series), which includes a stack of a 48P-X and 24P-X models.
I have another C9260X-48P that does not form part of this network, and I want to integrate it into it.
The current topology is a star.

I have configured on the stack port gi2/0/45 a trunk, with native and default on vlan 1, and on the other switch port Gi1/0/45,
also as a trunk, with native and default on vlan 1. From the switch that does not form part of the network, I can ping the stacked
switch and all components on the network. Also from the stacked switch, I can ping the switch that I want to add without a problem.

I configured one port on the switch, that does not form part of the network, as an access port using vlan 1. The computer on that port can ping the switch, but nothing beyond the switch. The switch itself can ping the computer. Shouldn't the computer be able to ping everything on the network?? What am I missing?

What information do you require to be help to assist me?

Thanks,

DarBeau.

Let's call the switch in the Stack as Switch1 and the switch that need to be added to the network, Switch2.

These are the ip addresses in play:
======================================
Switch1: 192.168.0.120
Switch2: 192.168.0.127
Workstation on switch2 (gi1/0/35): 192.168.0.131
Internet modem: 192.168.0.4

This is the configuration of Switch 1:
======================================
Switch1#show run interface gi2/0/45
Building configuration...

Current configuration : 62 bytes
!
interface GigabitEthernet2/0/45
switchport mode trunk
end

Thank you for your quick reply Ammahend,
I have been working with switches for more then 10 years now, just not Cisco Catalyst switches.
and yes, I am taking courses (through YouTube). But here is more information, as far as I can see, it should work:

Let's call the switch in the Stack as Switch1 and the switch that need to be added to the network, Switch2.

These are the ip addresses in play:

The only thing different I see is "Administrative Native VLAN tagging" which is enable on one and disabled on another one, do try this command on switch 2 and see if it works

conf t

vlan dot1q tag native

Welcome to the world of Cisco !

-hope this helps-

Thank you Ammahend,

I have tried changing like you said and it did not have any effect.
I still cannot ping the other switch. Any other suggestions?

after ping, when you do "arp-a" on PC do you see arp entry for 192.168.0.120 or its incomplete ?

-hope this helps-

Hi Ammahend,

After I applied the "vlan dot1q tag native", I was not able to ping from switch2 to switch1.
I applied "no vlan dot1q tag native" to switch2 and now I can ping switch1 from switch2 again.
Other thing I have noticed, when I ping switch2 from the computer, it takes several seconds before I get a reply.
I do get a full reply (100%) though.

C:\>arp -a

Interface: 192.168.0.131 --- 0xb
Internet Address Physical Address Type
192.168.0.127 50-08-ac-bb-64-c0 dynamic
192.168.0.255 ff-ff-ff-ff-ff-ff static
.......
224.0.0.2 01-00-5e-00-00-02 static

I have removed some entries for privacy, they are from another IP range.

if you are able to ping now, then arp entry must be ok now, how much is the reply time for ping ?

keep in mind the first ping take a bit of time, because it has to do arp but once the arp table is populated it should be quick 1-5ms.

-hope this helps-

Hi Ammahend,

I am not able to ping. I am able to ping across vlan 1 ports on Switch2, but the traffic does not go trough the trunk.
I have even tried the following: I have a production switch on the network that is at same firmware level as Switch2.
I backed up and restored the configuration of that production switch, onto Switch2, changed the ip adddress of vlan 1 (to avoid IP conflict) and tried again. Could this be something of spanningtree not letting packets through?? (just learning about SPT right now). Or maybe the switch is simply deffective???

can you draw the topolgy

Hi Ammahend & MHM,

In **rther troubleshooting and researching I came across this article which I think is my problem:
https://community.cisco.com/t5/switching/ilet-1-authentication-fail-on-2960x-after-ios-update/td-p/3682974

Tried a couple of the fixes mentioned, like downgrading, remove stack module, etc. etc. None worked so I think
my only option is to call Cisco. Thanks for all the help!

Quick update:
After restarting a couple of times after the firmware downgrade to 15.2(2)E5, the error messages did not appear anymore.
Now that the switch is not throwing those errors, I tested the setup again and now everything is working as should.
