Hi !
We need to upgrade a few ISR4K routers (4321 and 4331) to IOS-XE 17.12.04b. According to the release notes, the recommended version for the CPLD for that IOSXE version is 19040541, available as a bin file isr4300_cpld_update_v2.0.SPA.bin
To upgrade, we upload both images (the CPLD bin file and the IOS-XE bin file) to the router, and modify the boot var to point to CPLD, then IOSXE.
That works fine for most routers, but on a few of them we get the following message:
router#reload ERROR: Unable to determine image family. WARNING: First boot statement uses bootflash:isr4300_cpld_update_v2.0.SPA.bin But this image is not compatible with system. Please correct boot statement to specify compatible image or copy compatible image to bootflash:isr4300_cpld_update_v2.0.SPA.bin. Do you wish to proceed with reload anyway[confirm]n router#
How can we solve this and have both CPLD and IOS-XE upgraded?

Etienne

Hi!
As I am having similar upgrade in the near future, I was wondering if you managed to resolve this an the rest of the routers? What further confuses me, is that in different install guides/release notes I see different procedures to install CPLD, one procedure being the one you mentioned, while the other going like " upgrade hw-programmable cpld filename". Are these two procedures doing the same thing?
Also, at what point did you perform CPLD upgrade? before upgrading ROMMON and IOS-XE?
Thank you very much!

Hi Goran,
The customer requried to stage new routers with the correct version and config, so I was not able to do the upgrade on the routers with the issue. Note that most routers did not have this issue, it was actually three out of about 20 routers.
Good question about the ROMMON, maybe I had to look at an upgrade of that too! I guess the correct order would be ROMMON, CPLD then IOS-XE.
I think the "upgrade hw-...." was the command for older IOS-XE 3.x, not sure it is still available in the current 17.x

Actually I had checked the ROMMON version and all routers were on 16.12(2r).
