IE3400 - Firmware Identification Question

For an IE3400 series switch, I have a firmware file of ie3x00-universalk9.16.12.01c. The firmware version is referred to as 16.12.01. Anyone know what the 9 denotes or is used for?

You should refer as K9

 

K9 refers to paylod cryptography, -  PSec VPN, SSL VPN, and Secure Unified Communications.
