Cisco Switches password configuration

Hey Everybody that visit's this Thread.

i have used a couple different models of switches and every time i set this string of commands

enable>conf t>secret>password

my switch doesn't take my password.

i think it might be because of some of the characters i use, but it allows me to use this password on this command

en>conf t>line console 0>password

i use these special characters ! _ - in the password that i set.

i'm not sure if the command

en>conf t>service password-encryption

has something to do with the special characters

so, basically what i am asking is why does my switch stop taking my password when i set the command

en>conf t>enable secret password

but i can use the same password in other locations of the switch.

i have to reset the switch every time i set that command.

thanks for an advice

Hello Darrell,

The problem might be related to the use of special characters in the password. When you set the enable secret password using the en>conf t>enable secret command, the password might not be accepted due to certain special characters. The service password-encryption command is unlikely to affect the acceptance of special characters, as it mainly encrypts passwords in the configuration. I would recommend checking if the special characters you're using comply with the password policy of the switch model you are using. Some switches may have restrictions on specific characters for security reasons.

Best regards
