Introduction
This document explains steps to do when migrating Cisco UCS from one location to another with different IP addessing scheme. This document is applicable to all hardware and software version of UCS. Note that the information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.
With Cisco UCS you can tune your environment to support the unique needs of each application while powering all your server workloads on a centrally managed, highly scalable system. Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) Manager provides unified, embedded management of all software and hardware components in the Cisco UCS.
Migrate UCS
Follow these steps to migrate Cisco UCS system.
Step 1:: Gracefully Shutdown UCS
a) Graceful shutdown of servers: To shutdown the OS running in the server, UCSM sends ACPI signal to the server OS. The OS generally responds by gracefully shutting down; however this may not happen in certain cases. It is advisable to manually check if the OS has shutdown. Disassociating service profile from the servers will also shutdown the severs; however this is not advisable and is not graceful.
b) Disable management services: This step is optional and is intended only to lower the admin burden because of UCS system going down. Disable services like “Smart call Home” to stop UCS system from sending logs and information.
c) Decomission and Remove power to Chassis: Decomissoning is required only in case if you need to change the chassis. In other cases you can directly remove the power to chassis. This is done to stop the power to blade/rack server and Fabric Extender. There is nothing to be configured or saved from chassis end point.
d) Change Virtual IP: Logon to UCSM and navigate to the Admin tab then under Communication Management-> Management Interfaces. Change the Virtual IP, FI-A and FI-B to the new IP address, subnet and gateway and click Save changes. You will be logged out of UCSM.
e) Remove power to Secondary FI: This step is optional and is required only if you have two FI in failover. Removing power first from secondary FI prevents the system from doing failover, which is unnecessary here.
f) Remove power to Primary FI: As the last step remove the power to the primary FI. Note that there is no graceful shutdown method in case of FI, since it is not required.
Step 2:: Configure the Network
a) Configure VLANs: Make your vlan changes to the network ports where the FI management ports are connected. If you're using a DNS name for your UCS cluster make sure you update that DNS record. You can now logon to UCSM with the new IP.
Step 3:: Change the Management IP address
a) In UCSM GUI navigate to the LAN tab->Pools->IP Pool ext-mgmt.
b) Delete the old block of IP addresses.
c) Create a new block of IP addresses under the IP Pool ext-mgmt in the new subnet range. The CIMC's will then grab a IP address from the new block you created.
