Cisco ESA appliance verbatim SMTP Error messages

Hi All,

After changing the mail gateway to Cisco ESA appliances my client experienced an unexpected failure in a custom Delivery Failure Processing application used to update contact information after email bounces.

It seems in addition to the numeric SMTP code (only) sent by the previous gateway the Cisco ESA appliances include an error message in brackets , as follows:
   5.0.0 (permanent failure)
   5.1.1 (bad destination mailbox address)
5.7.1 (SMTP transmission failure has occurred)
These are the only three STMP errors currently being thrown, but to avoid a costly code fix I need the verbatim error messages for all the codes below, but cant find them anywhere. I have no access to the Cisco ESA appliances and cannot coerce the error messages to see what comes out.

Can someone please help?

Email Error Codes
There are 2 format Error codes come in, x.x.x and xxx. (Where x stands for a number). Many people get a failed email message and just know that the mail didn’t go through. This message is called a bounceback.  What does that message really mean?
The failed email notice tells you what is wrong and why the email failed.
This way you can determine if it is your email or the one you are sending to.
Email Error Codes have 3 Digits

(The 1st digit indicates if the response was good, bad, or incomplete) If the 1st digit is a…

1 The Command was accepted, but the action is pending confirmation of a reply
2 The action was completed successfully
3 The command was accepted, but the action is pending receipt of further information.
4 The command was not accepted and the requested action did not occur. These are usually because of a temporary error or condition and one should try resending the request again.
5 The command was not accepted and the requested action did not occur. This is a permanent failure message. Something needs to be fixed before the action will work.

If the 2nd digit is a….
0 Syntax-Usually refers to a syntax error occurring.
1 Information-Reply to a request for information.
2 Connections-Refers to the channel transmitting
3 or 4 These are undefined still

Hi Robert,

Thank you for the detailed reply, and this is certainly helpful.

However, comparing the 3 messages I am getting with the text messages you have provided shows significant differences.

In particular, my 3 messages have brackets. Because the code does an exact match on the error message, I need to know the exact text the Cisco ESA appliance is sending, and which is clearly different from the documentation you kindly provided.

Without the verbatim text (including brackets) sent by the Cisco ESA appliance I will have to resort to a costly code fix, in spite of the software already allowing for code free reconfiguration via the web.config files. :(
