Hi,

notice that in my message tracking log, an entry like

SMTP delivery connection (DCID 866) opened from Cisco IronPort interface 165.x.x.x to IP address 10.92.1.94 on port 25

is appearing randomly in my message tracking, we can find it in some of the mail, but not every.

Please advise if any reason on this issue, thanks

That doesn't appear at random. The appliance will open a connection when if needs to deliver a message. Here are some other things that you can look for:

1) If the connection to the remote system fails the log entry is different (Connection error: DCID xxxxx)

2) After the connection opens you will see an entry like this:

Delivery start DCID 866 MID xxxxx to RID [0]

That's the appliance sending a message down the open connection.

3) Sometimes the appliance can process a MID in one logfile and deliver it after a log rollover (next log file)

4) If a message gets requeued due to a delivery error there is a backoff delay that can make the delivery attempts appear to happen at random times. That's by design so that you don't have too many messsages trying to be delivered at once.

Hi Steven,

nothing wrong here, as a single connection (with a DCID )can be used for more than one message transmission, you often will see that line only for the first of a series of messages to a specific destination.  Every message sent via that connection afterwards will just show the DCID being used, without specifically stating how it was opened before.

Hope that helps,

Andreas
