It was suggested that we remove some ciphers on our ESA. After running sslconfig and verify to test our existing cipher strings, I see we have SHA1 ciphers. I would like to disable these, but it seems like we should first see if they are being used at all. Is this possible?
Also, if an email comes from some external email system that doesn't support any of our ciphers, I presume the email would bounce back to them as non-deliverable. Is there a way to see that on our side?
Thanks!
Danny

Hey Danny,
Ken hit the nail on the head; no 'native' UI item or report to share this.
You can grep the mail_logs (if you have CLI access) for "TLS success protocol TLSv" and it will show you each TLS transaction and cipher used at the SMTP level.
Most browsers don't support the weaker ciphers so you'll be swell there.
Thanks,
Mathew

Thanks Ken & Matthew for the replies! Here's our current settings:
GUI HTTPS:
TLS 1.0/1.1/1.2, SSLv3
AES128:AES256:!SRP:!AESGCM+DH+aRSA:!AESGCM+RSA:!aNULL:-aNULL:-EXPORT:-IDEA
SMTP Ciphers (Inbound & Outbound):
-RC4-SHA:-RC4-MD5:ALL:-aNULL:-EXPORT:-RC4:-IDEA
When I verify the SMTP cipher string I get almost 80 ciphers, HALF of which have SSLv3 for encryption type! And more than half contain SHA1. I want to remove these since they are known to be deprecated, but really would feel more comfortable if I can see if they're being used at all. Then perhaps maybe I can proactively notify that organization.
I want to uncheck SSLv3, TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 from GUI HTTPS. This shouldn't be an issue, I believe.
I will google how to grep in the CLI. If by chance anyone has any links to resources, its greatly appreciated!
I looked at encryption logs. I didn't see what I was looking for. I will check the mail_logs.
I came up with this string which removes SSLv2 and SSLv3, also adds @STRENGTH at the end:
Enter the ssl cipher you want to verify.

Hi Ken, thanks for that detailed explanation! But when I ran the string you suggested, I get ciphers which include SSLv3, SHA1, even MD5.
Enter the ssl cipher you want to verify.

Ken that is SUPER helpful, thank you so much! Am I correct in my understanding that exclamations disable, but the dash actually removes those ciphers from the appliance?
I accidentally marked your reply as answer but then remembered this post was more about getting info on the ciphers. I did download mail_logs and searched for SSLv3 and SHA1, and didn't find any results for ciphers used. I used Notepad++ to search the files. Is there a better way? Matthew suggested "grep the mail_logs files. I haven't figured out how to do that yet.
Thanks again!!!
Danny

Ken you are my hero of the day! I just tried it out, and able to see TLS success entries nicely. But last question hopefully, do you know what I could grep/search to specifically see cipher failures or mismatch?
EDIT: I found in another discussion to grep / search for "no shared cipher". I ran it and got only a few results, within about 30 seconds of eachother. I searched the timeframe in message tracking, and seems like someone was doing some testing. Hopefully someone on my team!
