IPv6 L2 multicast question

Andras Dosztal

Hi,

What's the default behavior of switches when receiving IPv6 L2 multicst addresses (3333.xxxx.xxxx)? Do they flood it to all ports, or check the mac-address table for the lower 32 bits of the address?

Thank you in advance.

Hi Andras,

It basically depends whether MLD snooping is supported or not on the switch. If it is not then the behavior is to flood multicast traffic to all ports. See the following document for an explanation of the MLD snooping behavior.
