Cisco PIX Training vs ASA

My question is pretty simple, although before investing further I wanted to get answers from individuals who are familiar with both PIX and ASA series routers.

I eventually will get an ASA, but for now am going to get a PIX mostly for training and educational purposes, including studying for my CCNA. I read online that the biggest differences between the ASA and the PIX is security, and I want to safely assume additional features.

But if I picked up a PIX, would I be able to accomplish the following factors and be able to similarly set them up on an ASA in the future

- QOS for SIP traffic via limitation - Basically reserving bandwidth from DST IP

- VLAN configurations

- VPN Tunneling - From PIX to PIX

- I know the PIX has a firewall that can be configured for 5060 TCP / UDP traffic just like the ASA via CLI and ASDM - Are there any issues with these and VOIP? I did some research and couldn't find anything.

After I familiarize myself more I will switch to an ASA, but basically is the PIX a good way to test and familiarize myself with the above information before investing in an ASA?

I would not recommend using a Pix. The interface is deprecated and you would have to learn command syntax that's different from the current ASA cli.

A better course of action would be to use a virtual ASA (ASAv) running as a VM. The free download is bandwidth-limited but will be much more like a "real" ASA with current software features.
